When visiting the Kingdom as President of Ghana, he always received a cordial welcome, and he praised the connection between the two nations.

When Sheikh Faisal Al Thani, the CEO of the Qatar Investment Authority for Africa and Asia, made him a courtesy visit yesterday at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo was in the middle of a speech.

Connections of diplomacy

After almost 30 years of “progressive” ties between the two nations, which were started in 1981 through non-resident representation, Ghana opened its embassy in the Qatari city of Doha in 2018.

A number of signed agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoU) that govern the two nations’ interactions, including a 2007 agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of financial evasion, bind the two nations.

Additionally, it contains agreements for the creation of a trade and investment committee between the two nations in 2004, a memorandum of understanding between the foreign affairs ministries of the two nations in 2004, and a contract between the chambers of commerce of Ghana and Qatar to create a joint business council.

In addition to confirming the intention to advance ties and raise them to new heights in the best interests of the two nations and their peoples, the exchange of reciprocal visits between the two nations does so.

Former Israeli Foreign Minister

In a similar incident, yesterday at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo had a courtesy call from Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen. During their conversation, the President requested Israel’s assistance in helping Ghana handle and manage its water resources.

In addition, he added, “I have no doubt that businesses with knowledge in that field might assist Ghana in protecting its water resources.” He said Ghana was interested in using Israel’s knowledge and technology in the processing and management of water.

Additionally, according to President Akufo-Addo, Israel has made significant strides in the field of cyber security and has developed a system for harnessing water for useful purposes. These are just two of the many things that Ghana may learn from Israel.

In reference to an Africa-Israel summit, where African nations will assemble in Israel in December, he claimed that many African leaders found such gatherings challenging.

Accordingly, the African Union has developed a procedure for these gatherings, the President stated.

Purpose

As a sign of how significant the relationships between the two countries were, Mr. Cohen claimed that his trip to Ghana was his first bilateral meeting in Africa.

He said that the visit was also intended to further the two nations’ already friendly ties, particularly in the fields of health, cyber security, and agriculture.

In keeping with that, Mr Cohen stated that he was in charge of a corporate delegation that included individuals with backgrounds in infrastructure, agriculture, and cyber security, among other fields.

He praised Ghana’s contribution to maintaining world security and peace, which included sending around 1,000 Ghanaian peacekeepers to Lebanon.
