A meeting held in Effiduase in the Ashanti Region for Zonal Coordinators, Constituency Chairmen, and Regional Executives has seen Members of Parliament pledging to ensure Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia gets 85% endorsement from delegates in the region during the NPP’s Presidential Primaries.

The meeting, which was tagged ‘First DMB Operational Meeting,’ aimed at strategizing on ways to secure Bawumia’s victory to lead the NPP in the 2024 general elections. The Vice President, according to Dr. Ayew Afiriyie, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, who hosted the meeting, has the support of a majority of NPP MPs, and he believes he is the best person to lead the party.

However, Afiriyie denied allegations that the MPs were being coerced to endorse Bawumia’s candidature. He emphasized that there is a freedom movement in the NPP, and individuals are at liberty to support any candidate they believe in.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Deputy Trade and Industry Minister and MP for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, and the Deputy Local Government Minister and MP for Offinso North, Collins Ntim, were some of the Members of Parliament present at the meeting.

For the most part, Bawumia’s candidature has gained momentum since he was endorsed by some Constituency Chairmen and NPP Executives, including the Northern Regional Chairman, Alhaji Iddrisu Sunday, and the Upper East Regional Chairman, Anthony Namoo, among others.

The NPP’s Presidential Primaries is expected to take place later this year, with Bawumia and former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s brother, Dr. Addo Kufuor, tipped as the two front-runners for the position.
