The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and its affiliates have announced a nationwide protest in solidarity with the Ghana Mine Workers Union of TUC. The protest will take place on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Kpone, the site of Sunon Asogli Ghana Limited’s operations. The protest is in response to the failure of the company to reinstate local union executives who happen to be workers in the company. According to the union, their local leaders were terminated because they joined the Ghana Mine Workers Union which is under the Trades Union Congress.

The General Secretary of the union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, called Sunon Asogli’s reaction to the claims absurd. In response, the Ghana Mine Workers Union stated that it will embark on a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, May 9 to demand the reinstatement of the terminated workers.

The TUC and its 23 affiliates will converge at Kpone, where the company operates, to demonstrate that workers’ rights must be respected and are non-negotiable. The union hopes that before May 9, the company will take action to reinstate the terminated workers. However, if no substantial progress is made by Monday, May 8, the TUC’s structures have made a decision to act accordingly.

The union has also held a meeting with an associate of the company, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede, to find an amicable solution to their demands. The union hopes that this meeting will yield positive results and prevent the need for a protest.

For the most part, the TUC and its affiliates have maintained that they will not back down until the terminated workers are reinstated. The union believes that workers’ rights are fundamental and must be protected at all costs. The protest will send a strong message to Sunon Asogli Ghana Limited and other companies that disregard workers’ rights. The TUC and its affiliates are ready to take all necessary actions to ensure that workers are treated fairly and justly.
