Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artist Epixode, known for his boundary-pushing musical style, recently won the Best Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year award at the 24th edition of the VGMA (Vodafone Ghana Music Awards). However, in a surprising revelation, he expressed his desire to be recognized for his highlife endeavors instead.

Epixode, born Theophilus Nii Arday Otoo, shared his thoughts on why he wasn’t expecting to win the Best Reggae/Dancehall Song award. In an interview on 3FM’s Block Party with Chrystal K Aryee, he explained that his hit single, “Atia,” incorporated highlife inspirations and sounds that he believed made it more popular. He had hoped to secure the Highlife Song of the Year award.

Despite being primarily associated with reggae/dancehall, Epixode’s exploration of highlife has propelled his music to new heights. He acknowledged that the highlife elements in “Atia” played a significant role in its success, surpassing the reggae elements. The reggae served as the foundation of the song, but it was the infusion of highlife that took it to a different level, according to the artist.

Epixode, always keen on breaking free from expectations and venturing into new creative avenues, shed light on why the song appealed to the reggae/dancehall fraternity. He credited the presence of renowned producer Just-I on the track, who ensured that the original elements were maintained and that it was produced live. This authenticity gave the song mileage and garnered appreciation from fans.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Epixode emphasized that he is honored to represent reggae, even though he had been associated with highlife in the past. Winning the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of The Year award in 2021 further solidified his position within the genre.

Epixode’s willingness to explore different musical genres, such as highlife, reflects his determination to create timeless sounds and establish a lasting legacy. He has consistently pursued his unique sound, steering away from trends and focusing on the longevity of his brand.

In a nutshell, Epixode’s unexpected victory in the Best Reggae/Dancehall Song category at the VGMA showcases his versatility as an artist. While he had set his sights on the Highlife Song of the Year award, he remains grateful for the recognition and aims to create music that will transcend genres and leave a lasting impact on the industry.
