The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, located in Tamale, is soon to undergo significant renovation and maintenance works to restore its suitability for sporting activities, according to Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif. The stadium, currently serving as the home grounds for Real Tamale United and Tamale City in the Ghana Premier League, has been in need of repair and upgrades.

Ussif affirmed the government’s commitment to improving sports infrastructure across the country, mentioning that renovation works have already commenced on major sports stadia such as the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, and the Essipon Sports Stadium in the Western Region. He assured that the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will also receive its share of renovations.

The first phase of renovation and maintenance for various sports facilities has been completed, with plans in place for a second phase. In order to assess the challenges faced by the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium and ensure proper care and maintenance, Minister Ussif recently conducted a tour of the facility.

During his visit, the Minister addressed the issue of power disconnection at the stadium, which occurred last month due to an outstanding debt of GHc466,000 owed to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo). Ussif met with the management of the Northern Regional Directorate of the National Sports Authority to discuss the matter.

The current state of the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, with its deteriorating VVIP section roof, toilet facilities, and popular stands, has led to the venue being consistently rejected by both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) for hosting international matches.

In a nutshell, the confirmation of imminent renovations and maintenance at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium is a promising development for the sporting community in Tamale. With the government’s dedication to improving sports infrastructure and addressing the stadium’s challenges, it is anticipated that the facility will be restored to its former glory, providing a suitable and modern venue for sporting events in the future.
