Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a presidential aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has filed an injunction application at the High Court to halt the upcoming NDC presidential primaries. The suit is based on the fact that Dr. Duffuor has raised issues with some anomalies on the voter’s register for the elections.

According to the writ, only data from 220 out of the 275 constituencies had been verified. Dr. Duffuor alleges that an exceptional list of 74,799 had been created, which could not be verified because of scanty information provided about them in the Photo Album Register. He further claimed that, for no credible reason, 3,910 eligible voters at the 220 constituencies had been disenfranchised.

In addition, he stated that a sizeable number of eligible voters had no photographs exhibited on the Photo Album Register making it impossible to conduct any meaningful verification exercise on those persons. Dr. Duffuor alleged that the photo album put out by the Party’s election committee with the knowledge, consent, and tacit approval of the General Secretary of the Party would compromise the integrity of the election to his detriment.

The NDC is yet to officially respond to the suit. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that there is no basis for the Party to postpone the primaries. He said the Party had followed due processes based on the rules governing the upcoming elections and assured delegates and aspirants that the elections would come on as scheduled.

In a nutshell, with just three days to the primaries, this injunction application by Dr. Duffuor has thrown a spanner in the works of the NDC’s preparations for their upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries. While the Party is yet to officially respond to the suit, the Chairman of the Party has stated that the primaries will still go on as scheduled. It remains to be seen what the outcome of the suit will be and whether the NDC will have to make changes to their preparation plans for the primaries.
