Tema Technical School wins second edition of the Tema Industrial Lions Club environmental recycling competition

Tema Industrial Lions Club and Zoomlion Ghana Limited organised the second edition of their environmental recycling competition in a bid to promote sustainable waste management and a healthier future. Five schools, namely Presbyterian Senior High, Methodist Day Senior High, Chemu Senior High, Tema Secondary School, and Tema Technical School, were challenged to come up with innovative ways to turn waste products into reusable items.

Tema Technical School emerged as the winner of the competition, scoring 82 percent for their project that involved merging melted plastic and sand into bricks. The students defined it as an “absolute recycling product” that can be used as a building material. They added that it could help in the country’s plastic waste management and urged the government to consider it as a standardized building material.

The Tema Methodist Day Senior High placed second with a 71 percent score, while Presbyterian Senior High came in third with a 69 percent score. Zoomlion Ghana Limited provided each participating school with five dustbins and five Veronica buckets to aid in their waste management practices.

Environmental Planner and Competition Judge, Mr Anthony Kaye Foli, stated that the initiative aimed to educate and sensitize the younger generation about waste management and the fundamentals of environmental cleaning. It also aimed to teach children about the benefits of using recyclable materials.

In a nutshell, the competition encourages schools to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions to waste management problems. The use of recyclable materials can not only help in waste reduction but also contribute to sustainable development. The competition also helps to instill environmental responsibility and sensitivity in the younger generation, who are the future leaders and stewards of the environment. The government can take note of these initiatives and encourage more schools to participate, as well as consider the implementation of some of these ideas into national policies for sustainable development.
