The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has demanded an apology from the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, following his recent comments regarding the alleged exploitation of Ghanaians by traders. GUTA has described the comments as “sheer arrogance and complete ignorance” and called for an immediate retraction and unqualified apology.

Mr. Osei-Owusu reportedly claimed in an interview with a Kumasi-based television station that traders are “over-exploiting Ghanaians” and accused them of dishonesty and implied that they are thieves who are ripping off Ghanaian consumers. However, GUTA has vehemently denied these allegations and stated that its members are patriotic and honest Ghanaians who are contributing significantly to the development of the country.

In a statement dated April 17, 2023, GUTA condemned Mr. Osei-Owusu’s comments and demanded that he retract his statement and apologize to members of the business community. They added that traders are not responsible for high taxes, and the government should be held accountable for that.

GUTA has also highlighted the challenges faced by traders, such as high taxes, rent, and utility bills, which make it difficult for them to operate profitably. They have called for measures to be put in place to reduce the burden on traders and improve the business environment in Ghana.

In conclusion, GUTA has called for respect for the business community and for politicians to desist from making baseless allegations against traders. They have stressed that traders are an essential part of Ghana’s economy and should be treated with the respect they deserve.
