Ghana Gears Up for WTTC Africa Regional Championship with a Focus on Winning Medals

Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) president, Mawuko Afadzinu, has revealed that the upcoming West African Table Tennis Tournament (WTTC) Africa Regional Championship is a chance for Ghanaian players to gain international exposure and win more medals. The tournament, which will take place at the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra from April 24-27, 2023, is a significant event for Ghana’s table tennis community.

During the press launch of the competition, Afadzinu stated that their primary goal is to win more medals and secure qualification to the African Championship in Tunisia later in September 2023. Ghana’s male and female teams are both poised to perform exceptionally and bring more medals home this time. At the last championship, Ghana bagged one silver and one gold medal.

Afadzinu also stated that the tournament would increase the chances of Ghanaian players qualifying for the Olympics for the first time in 36 years. The competition would provide them with more exposure to international tournaments, which would aid their preparation for the Olympics.

Ghana Olympic Committee president, Ben Nunoo Mensah, who attended the event, emphasized that the West African Table Tennis Tournament would provide an opportunity for the media to report on and write about the game, as well as to learn the rules and scoring of the game. He also noted that hosting the tournament would give Ghana’s athletes a better chance to prepare for next year’s African Games.

Ten West African countries, including Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Liberia, are expected to present athletes for the championships. The tournament would be a chance for Ghana to showcase its table tennis talent and prove its potential as a strong contender in the sport.
