The New Horizon Special School (NHSS) organized its 2023 Annual Fun Day Games to demonstrate to the general public the sporting prowess of kids with special disabilities.

The event’s theme was “The role of inclusive sports and adaptive physical activity for persons with intellectual disability,” and students demonstrated their talent in a variety of sports, including football, the three-legged race, wheelchair races, 50- and 80-meter dashes, the sack race, and filling bottles. Parents and the audience cheered and applauded the students as they competed.

The school started the games in 1992 to provide the unique kids a chance to participate in sports like their peers do in ordinary schools, as well as to set high standards and encourage maximal effort.

The event has been held over the years to develop physical ability and qualities including cardiovascular fitness, strength, weight, and balance, according to Justice Mrs. Helena Nkumsah Abban, Retired High Court Judge and Board Member of the School.

She added that it was also intended to raise pupils’ self-esteem, as well as to improve their behavior, stamina, and general sense of wellness.

The purpose of the day, according to her, was not only to amuse the students, their families, and friends, but also to demonstrate to the public the skills of kids with special needs. She added that during the competitions, winning was not always the goal but rather the kids’ cooperation, discipline, and enjoyment of taking part.

All competitors received medals at the conclusion of the competitions, according to Justice Abban, who cited the Special Olympics motto “let me win but if I cannot win let me be brave in the endeavour.”

The yearly fun games were started to give a chance to kids who are not privileged to participate in the special Olympics, she said, adding that the school had the opportunity to participate in the International Special Olympics on numerous occasions.

The Board Member praised the staff and parents for their unselfish effort to caring for the pupils and dedicated this year’s event to the memory of the school’s late founder, Mrs. Salome Francoais.

The non-profit, philanthropic New Horizon Special School, which was founded in January 1972, offers individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities practical training and jobs in addition to day school instruction for children.

The school strives to maximize each student’s potential in order to prepare them for successful and fulfilling lives as members of society.

The aforementioned, the aforementioned, the aforementioned, the aforementioned.
