Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Finance Minister of Ghana, has criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the current economic crisis in the country. He questioned the whereabouts of the NPP’s “solid economic management team” and stated that the economy is in bad shape. Duffuor promised that if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) comes into power, they will prove their skills in turning the economy around, just as they did in 2009.

Ghana has undertaken a painful debt restructuring program, yet it is still struggling to bring down its debt portfolio. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a $3 billion loan to help the country avoid an economic collapse. However, the IMF is projecting that Ghana’s debt to GDP ratio will increase to 98.7% by the end of 2023. The country has defaulted on its debts, leading to a struggling economy.

Despite this, Duffuor is confident that the NDC has the strategy to turn the economy around and reduce the current economic hardship on Ghanaians. He reassured the delegates of the NDC that they have done it before during the late Atta Mills era when they inherited a terrible economy. With competent people, the economy was turned around, and the same will happen again. Duffuor also assured the public that the NDC has the right strategy to reduce the current economic hardship in Ghana.

Duffuor has been on a 4-day campaign tour in the Eastern region ahead of the NDC’s Presidential Primaries on May 13, 2023, which he is contesting together with former President John Mahama and former Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu. He has been assuring delegates of the NDC a rebirth of the party to revert power to the grassroot. Duffuor reiterated his commitment to making NDC a business-centered party with shares in major companies, provide monthly salaries to executives of the party from regional and constituency levels, restore the heroes fund, institute a pension scheme for the party, and build regional and constituency offices for the party.

Constituency Chairmen of the party in the areas visited so far have acknowledged the massive contribution of Dr. Duffuor to the NDC and his enviable records on the economy of Ghana as former Finance Minister. They assured that delegates will not forget his contributions on May 13, 2023. Duffuor is committed to empowering women in the party to sustain progress for maximum impact on the success of the NDC.

For the most part, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has been campaigning for the NDC, highlighting the party’s commitment to turning the economy around and restoring power to the grassroot. He has reassured delegates that the NDC has the right strategy to reduce the current economic hardship in Ghana. Duffuor’s campaign is centered on making NDC a business-centered party, empowering women, restoring the heroes fund, instituting a pension scheme, and building offices for the party.
