‘Bawumia spoke big in opposition but has piled on 40 senseless taxes’ – Kwakye Ofosu
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a former Deputy Minister of Information in the past NDC government, claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made life more difficult for Ghanaians by raising taxes.
He claims that after speaking out loudly in opposition, the administration imposed 40 “senseless” levies.
Kwqkye Ofosu referenced the Vice President in 2016 and wrote: “He spoke big in opposition, yet in power, he has piled on 40 senseless taxes that have increased hardships.”
Dr. Bawumia vowed that the NPP will abolish unnecessary financial service taxes and other vexing levies.
The protests occur after the government imposed a 15% VAT on power.
Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs, also added his voice to the worries, stating that the government has not followed through on its promise to shift Ghana’s economy from taxing to production.
Instead, it has become one of the most taxed regimes in the country’s history.
The Ministry of Finance gave notice on January 10, 2024, that users of power beyond the maximum usage level will be taxed a Value Added Tax beginning January 1, 2024.
Dr. Kwakye wrote on X: “Contrary to its pledge to move the economy from taxation to production, this Gov’t will go down in history as one of the most taxing Gov’ts.”
