In order to let the opposition in the legislature to lead the government assurance committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the member of parliament for North Tongu, has proposed a change to Standing Rules (Order 174).

The MP inquires as to the reason for the government’s broken promise that the IMF agreement will be finalised by the end of March 2023.

In addition, he wants the government to apologise to the populace and give an explanation for why the guarantee was false.

To put an end to this, he has suggested that the assurance committee of parliament be led by a member of the opposition to establish strong penalties for major government dishonesty.

Should the populace, like the government officials who serve them, act as if March didn’t end five days ago?

Don’t Ghanaians at the very least deserve an apology and an explanation?

Does the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/Ofori-Atta government truly possess the superior competence it claims?

Why did President Akufo-Addo keep giving firmer assurances, even when he delivered his Message on the State of the Nation in Parliament, despite the fact that so many experts, members of civil society, and the opposition saw a March deal as laughably impractical?

Going forward, it is important to alter Order 174 of the Standing Rules of the House of Commons in order to explicitly name an opposition MP as Chair of the Committee on Government Assurances and to establish severe penalties for major government dishonesty. The Ghanaian people must be respected by the leadership.
