The streets of Kumasi will come alive on April 22, 2023, as the Muslim traditional procession, popularly known as ‘Gangara,’ takes place. This ritual is an opportunity for various tribes to showcase their rich culture after the Ramadan fasting.

A statement signed by Naaba Musah Akabonga, the President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Ashanti region, revealed that a total of 150 security personnel would be deployed to ensure the safety of participants and maintain law and order. The personnel will consist of the police, military, fire service, and Ghana ambulance service.

The procession will start from the Manhyia Roundabout, led by the Council of Zongo Chiefs, and proceed to Roman Hill. The statement also urged all tribal heads and sub-heads in the region to mobilize their members to ensure a peaceful and successful ‘Gangara.’

The council further implored all participants to be law-abiding and dress decently worthy of the Islamic faith. They also dismissed any claim that certain groups or individuals have been banned from participating in the event, stating that the programme is open to all traditional tribes in the Ashanti region.

The statement concluded by expressing condolences to the family of the late Sultan Umar Farouk Saeed, the immediate past Sarkin Zongo, and praying for Allah’s mercy upon his soul.

As Kumasi prepares for this year’s ‘Gangara,’ the deployment of security personnel will provide participants and spectators with the needed safety and security to enjoy the rich cultural display of various tribes in the Ashanti region.
