The MP for Garu and Tempane, Albert Alalzuuga Akuka, is requesting information on the whereabouts of locals who were detained during a recent military operation in the district.

He demanded immediate government action to resolve the matter and denounced the act as an intolerable infringement of citizens’ rights.

The request for action was prompted by reports of military brutality against defenseless citizens in the early hours of Sunday, October 29, 2023, in the Garu and Bugre townships, in the Garu and Tempane constituencies.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, Akuka expressed his frustration, saying, “Military Officers during this dastardly swoop, their whereabouts and the crime for which they have been picked up have yielded no results two clear days after the unfortunate brutalities were visited upon them.”

In order to find a thorough solution, Akuka, the Garu MP, expressed his adamant desire for an urgent government involvement and a parliamentary investigation into the issue.

He pleaded with the authorities to look into the matter in great detail and make sure those who are in charge are held accountable.

“The residents of Garu and Tempane deserve safety and protection, and this action by the Military officers must be condemned in the strongest terms without any room for tolerance and reasonableness of any form of brutalities within Garu and Tempane constituencies and indeed, any other constituency,” he said.

According to recent allegations, military soldiers are said to have attacked local civilians during a morning raid in Garu.

In defense of their conduct, the Ghanaian Armed Forces claimed that the military intervention was necessary because local national security agents had been attacked by angry youngsters.

In a formal statement, the Ministry of National Security denied the villagers’ accusations, stating that the operation was a cooperative attempt to confiscate guns in response to a vigilante group’s attack in Garu on October 24.

MP Albert Alalzuuga Akuka, however, is unwavering in his denial of the National Security’s allegations, maintaining that the locals were abused needlessly.
