The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) reports that it anticipates the government would provide some funding for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results to be marked and announced.

The GNA was informed by Mr. John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, that the processes will be made easier by the money’s early release.

He said, “That is what we have used for the examination.” He stated that the Government had granted WAEC GHC10.5 million to begin with the BECE. Now that the exam is done, we anticipate the delivery of some funds so that we may proceed with the grading and the announcement of the results.

According to Mr. Kabi, the Council had a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 25, 2023, and he (the Minister) said that the Ministry had acknowledged that the funds released to the Council would not be sufficient for the entire process. As a result, he had given the Chief Director instructions to work toward the release of additional funds.

“As we speak now, no money has hit our accounts yet,” he added.

He stated that WAEC had completed its marking preparations and that the Council will begin coordinating its examiners on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

According to Mr. Kapi, marking will start on Monday, October 9, 2023, and coordination with examiners will end on Wednesday, October 4–7, 2023.

The Council had over 22,000 examiners that needed to be paid, according to the head of public affairs.

“The fear we have now is that if the government does not release funds, we may not be able to complete the process and what it means is that we may not be able to pay the examiners.

“We have made this clear to government and we hope that government keep the promise to release funds to enable us to complete the process.”

According to Mr. Kapi, the dissemination of the results is contingent upon the Government’s availability of cash.

He said that “as soon as we are done with the swapping of the regions in respect to WASSCE, then marking will start” and that the Council was considering delivering the BECE results in the last week of October 2023.
