The Dire Situation of Ghanaian Workers: TUC Speaks Out

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Ghana has raised concerns over the worsening conditions of workers in the country. According to Joshua Ansah, the Deputy General Secretary of TUC, the economic situation in the country has significantly eroded the salaries of workers to the extent that some cannot afford two square meals a day. This has led to a worrying situation that the TUC is determined to address urgently to prevent any further mishap.

Ansah expressed concerns that the unfavorable working conditions for workers are also being exacerbated by some employers taking advantage of the situation to erode workers’ rights. He noted that employers are doing whatever they want to do to workers, and there is little protection in the labor law to prevent such situations.

Despite the recent 30% increment in base pay for workers, Ansah noted that the increase was immediately eroded by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) announcement of a 30% hike in utility tariffs the next day. This has left workers in a worse position than before the pay rise.

The TUC is calling on the government to ensure that workers are working in favorable conditions and are rewarded accordingly. The union is determined to pursue every promise made by President Akufo-Addo at the May Day Celebration to ensure that workers’ needs are met.

Ansah stated that it is the worst situation for workers, and they are suffering a great deal. He noted that workers are finding it challenging to make ends meet, and this is not an easy time for them. He urged union leaders not to raise their hands in the air but to fight hard and protect workers’ rights.

In conclusion, the dire situation of Ghanaian workers is a significant concern that needs urgent attention. The TUC is calling on the government to implement measures that will improve the working conditions of workers and protect their rights. For the most part, workers in the country are struggling to make ends meet, and it is the duty of union leaders to protect and fight for their rights.
