Temilade Openiyi, often known as Tems, was born in Lagos on July 11, 1995, to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Her mother raised her alone after her father abandoned her when she was five years old.
She had her elementary schooling in Lagos and then attended Dowen College in Lekki. Later, she relocated to Johannesburg to get a degree in economics at a South African institution.

Tems was raised in a modest household and after joining a community chorus, she became aware of her musical potential. She began her journey to becoming a talented musician when she was young.
She practised on her brother’s guitar and recorded songs with the school chorus. She recalled how her music teacher pushed her to sing with her genuine voice when she doubted her talent, according to a documentary with MU Narratives.
