A Tamale-based political commentator has been arrested by the police for allegedly attacking a presenter of Dagbon FM in Tamale. Hardi Pagazaa reported to the police on Monday and was subsequently arrested.

On May 3, Mr Pagazaa, along with another person, entered the studios of the radio station and allegedly attacked presenter Sadiq Abubakari Gariba while he was presenting his show. A video of the attack, which was widely circulated on social media, showed Mr Gariba being held by his shirt at the neck level while exchanging words with his two attackers.

Following the incident, Mr Gariba reported the matter to the police with support from the Ghana Journalists Association. The police subsequently invited Hardi Pagazaa for questioning.

Attacks on journalists and media practitioners have been on the rise in recent times in Ghana. The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) recorded 63 incidents of violations against journalists and media practitioners in Ghana in 2020 alone.

These attacks, which range from physical assault to threats and intimidation, have a chilling effect on press freedom and the ability of journalists to do their work. It is essential that the police and other relevant authorities take swift action to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of these attacks to serve as a deterrent to others.

For the most part, journalists play a critical role in holding power to account and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. Attacks on them are not only an attack on press freedom but also an attack on democracy and good governance.

In summary, it is essential that the safety and security of journalists and media practitioners are guaranteed, and any attempt to intimidate or attack them should be met with swift and decisive action by the authorities. Journalists must be free to do their work without fear or favor, and the Ghanaian media landscape must be a safe and conducive environment for the practice of journalism.
