When they were unable to register for the second semester despite having paid the required 70% of their tuition, some Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) students enrolled in the university’s distance learning programme felt betrayed and unsure of their ability to continue their academic programmes.

In order for them to acquire the necessary funds and make the payment, the students are pleading with the university to extend the registration deadline until some point in August 2023. They cited the current economic difficulties and the expensiveness of the programmes as justifications for their inability to pay the entire fees on time.

“The tuition is between GHC 15,869 and GHC 21,000. Despite the fact that students have already paid 70% of their tuition, the university flagrantly violates its admissions agreement by preventing them from registering for their second semester courses.

One disappointed student bemoaned, “The Institute of Distance Learning is eroding trust in the KNUST Post Graduate course by severely requiring full-time payment of school fees, a divergence from the ethos and pattern of an enlightened advanced university.

They also call for intervention from the government and the ministry of education to avert the crisis.

In view of the above, there is a strong plea for the government to pressure the university to extend the deadline for continuing postgraduate students to pay their tuition until August 2023. The Minister of Education has to sit up, the irate youngster continued.

As of right now, university officials have not responded to the students’ accusations and concerns.
