The Tamale Technical University (TaTu) student body is pleading with the administration to act quickly to address the issues raised by the school’s faculty who are currently on strike.

The students who were still in possession of their final paper for the end-of-semester exams claim they will be forced to stay on campus later than planned due to the strike. According to them, this will strain them financially.

The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana’s TaTU branch went on an indefinite strike on May 10 in protest of an unapproved formula used to calculate their end-of-service benefits and the failure to pay them some allowances that were due from university-owned funds.

Seidu John Paul, the university’s SRC president, hinted that the strike is having an impact on students’ finances and mental health.
As a result of not being able to finish their final project and being stranded on campus without a place to stay, students who believed they were finished yesterday elected to pass out meals and book their tickets home instead. The students are presently unable to support themselves financially, and they even lack certainty regarding their plans to go back home to finish their final paper the following semester.

We request that TUTAG reconsider its decision and allow students to return to the classroom, and we would appreciate it if the government could also step in.
