International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) Medical Officer, Dr Dorothy Hanson, has advised Ghanaians to seek proper laboratory testing for malaria if they continue to experience symptoms after a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT).

Speaking at the “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility” program, Dr Hanson stressed the importance of obtaining accurate results to ensure proper treatment. Although RDTs can be useful in diagnosing malaria, they are not always successful due to errors in administration. Microscopy laboratory testing is still the “gold standard” for malaria testing, as it can accurately locate and count the number of parasites in a patient.

Dr Hanson called for better training for pharmacy attendants to conduct RDTs properly and to follow the unique instructions of each brand. Improper administration can lead to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. Therefore, she urged the public to always test before taking any malaria medications since malaria symptoms could be similar to those of other disorders.

To avoid mosquito bites and potential malaria contraction, Dr Hanson advised Ghanaians to keep their surroundings clean to limit mosquito breeding sites, sleep under treated mosquito nets, apply insecticides, and use repellents. She also noted that it was important to seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms of malaria and not to self-medicate.

For the most part, Dr Hanson emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis to ensure proper treatment and control of malaria. Although RDTs can be useful in diagnosing malaria, they are not always successful, and proper administration is critical. Therefore, it is important for pharmacy attendants to receive adequate training to administer RDTs accurately. Furthermore, Ghanaians should prioritize avoiding mosquito bites and seek proper medical attention if experiencing symptoms of malaria.
