Nana Akomea, Chief Executive Officer of STC, has warned the Electoral Commission about their plan to discontinue the use of indelible ink during elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that indelible ink would no longer be used in the country’s elections.

The Commission claims that a biometric authentication technology has been implemented to replace indelible ink, a semi-permanent dye put to a voter’s finger to prevent multiple voting, and that this step is being piloted in the present district elections.

“Once you have been verified, it goes into the system, and you cannot come back a second time. You can try it if you wish at this election. Of course, it will be deemed as an electoral offence,” the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa expressed confidence in the new system.

However, Nana Akomea has requested the EC to reconsider their judgment, stating that while this is a wonderful endeavor, it is best to assess the advantages and downsides to ensure the system is flawless.

He said that machines are not completely fail-safe, thus he worried if the EC authentication technique is completely dependable.

“These are machines. It can be faulty anytime…If the EC says it won’t use the india ink again, they should be careful…You can’t rely on them (machines) 100%” and they must consult with all the parties for them to agree to the arrangements, he commented during Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”.
