The Garu District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Samuel Atando Akolgo, has called on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the appropriate authorities. This comes in response to the threat of violent extremism and terrorism from the Sahel Region, which poses a danger to the Garu District, a border area.

Speaking to identified groups in Garu, Mr Akolgo emphasized the need for citizens to collaborate with security agencies to prevent any spillover of terrorist activities into the district. He noted that neighboring countries and coastal states had recently witnessed attacks or identified the presence of terrorist groups, underscoring the need for Ghana to be on guard.

Peace, stability, and tranquility are key elements of driving sustainable development in the country, and stakeholders must work to prevent the infiltration of extremists, which can destabilize progress made so far. The NCCE’s “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism” project, sponsored by the European Union, aims to promote peace, tolerance, and participation in the fight against violent extremism while engaging citizens on the need to promote social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

The project focuses on empowering citizens to be security conscious and volunteer information to security agencies on suspicious characters to foil possible attacks. Mr Akolgo stressed the need for peaceful coexistence and inter-faith tolerance to prevent triggers of violent extremism and radicalization, and prevent youth from joining extremist groups.

In a nutshell, the Garu District Director of the NCCE has urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and inter-faith tolerance to prevent triggers of violent extremism and radicalization. The “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism” project seeks to empower citizens to be security conscious and promote social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
