NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah has called for a focus on strengthening Ghana’s electoral system rather than on the political affiliations of the people appointed to the Electoral Commission (EC).
Ahiagbah argued that history has shown that individuals linked to political parties have been appointed to the EC in the past without affecting the outcome of elections.
His comments came after leading members of the opposition NDC accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of appointing NPP activists to sensitive positions such as the EC. Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for Buem, stated that newly-appointed EC member Dr. Peter Appiahene was a known NPP activist who is a member of the party’s communications team in the Bono Region.
Akufo-Addo recently swore in three new members of the EC, including Appiahene. However, Ahiagbah pointed out that the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Joseph Whittal, is a known member of the NDC. Ahiagbah maintained that Ghana’s focus should be on strengthening the electoral system, not on individuals’ political affiliations.
