Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has come out in defense of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) amidst criticism of their handling of Ghana’s economy. Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Hello FM, the minister stated that the NPP is not to be blamed for the country’s economic challenges, but rather victims of a global economic crisis.

Mensah argued that even the richest countries experience economic hardships and that it is unfair to create the impression that the NPP has performed badly. He went on to emphasize that the NPP has managed the economic crisis well and deserves credit for its performance.

The minister also urged Ghanaians to be more informed about global events and their impact on the country’s economy. According to him, those who have a good understanding of the situation appreciate the NPP’s efforts, and it is the party’s responsibility to sensitize the rest of Ghanaians about the impact of global events on the economy.

For the most part, Mensah’s defense of the NPP’s handling of the economy is not surprising, as party officials are typically defensive about their performance. However, the fact remains that many Ghanaians are struggling to make ends meet amid rising inflation, high unemployment rates, and a widening income gap.

While it is true that Ghana is not the only country experiencing economic challenges, the NPP’s critics argue that the party’s policies have not done enough to address the country’s unique problems. For example, many have criticized the government’s focus on borrowing to finance its projects, arguing that it has led to a ballooning national debt that will take years to pay off.

In the end, it is up to Ghanaians to decide whether the NPP’s performance has been satisfactory or not. Regardless, it is important for the government to continue to listen to the concerns of its citizens and take steps to address their needs, particularly in these difficult economic times.
