The vice president of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed worries about whether there would be adequate motorable roads in the nation for him to drive on during his campaign, according to Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu.

He clarified that this was a reference to the general elections in 2024.

Speaking to the media in parliament on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, about what he expects from Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as he delivers the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to the Ghanaian Parliament, the MP expressed his concerns about the current government’s plan to declare 2023 the Year of Roads.

He clarified that the budget needed to address the fact that Ghana’s roads are now impassable.

Haruna Idrisu, the MP for Tamale South, continued by saying that without it, he’s not even sure whether the vice president would have enough entry points to utilize throughout Ghana to further his bid to become the country’s next president.

“What happened to the Year of Roads? All the roads are deplorable. I’m even doubting whether Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would have motorable roads to campaign in Ghana,” he said.

The Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration has proclaimed the past several years (beginning in 2020) as the Year of Roads, with the intention of launching a nationwide road improvement initiative.
