Nana Oduro Sarfo, an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association, has defended himself against criticism following comments he made about ex-footballers and football administration. Sarfo had earlier advised that education must be prioritised by people who are willing to occupy roles to help in running football. He made this statement after Stephen Appiah’s advocacy for former players to be recognised when it comes to leadership roles in Ghana football.

Sarfo’s comments drew criticisms from a number of Ghanaians who felt that his statements were needless and disrespectful to Stephen Appiah and other ex-footballers. However, Sarfo has blamed journalists for misinforming the public and stated that he did not say anything to disrespect Stephen Appiah.

In his defence, Sarfo clarified that he did not even hear Stephen Appiah’s interview, but rather read a script of what he said during the interview he granted. He claimed that his response was that such comments should not come from a person who has a good relationship with the FA like Stephen.

Sarfo reiterated that his advice was that ex-players undergo training to acquire the necessary knowledge to run affairs when they are in charge of administration in football. He argued that his comments were wrongly reported and did not intend to disrespect Stephen Appiah or any other ex-footballer.

This incident has reignited the conversation about the importance of education and training for those seeking leadership roles in football administration. While there is no doubt that football is a game that requires talent and skill, it is also a business that requires knowledge and understanding.

In a nutshell, Nana Oduro Sarfo’s comments have generated controversy in Ghana’s football space, with some calling for more respect to be accorded to ex-players, and others advocating for the importance of education and training for those in leadership roles.
