Ghanaian musician, Maya Blu, has advised women to work hard and not depend on men for their survival. In an interview with journalist Attractive Mustapha NII Okai Inusah during the VGMA jam in Ho, the musician expressed her belief that a woman having her own money is a precious and sweet thing.

Maya Blu, who has been nominated in the ‘Unsung’ category for this year’s VGMA, performed one of her popular songs titled ‘Good girl no they pay’. She revealed that the song is a personal love story, and that being a good girl does not always pay off. She narrated how she made a lot of sacrifices in her own relationship in the hopes of keeping her man, only to be betrayed in the end.

“When both of us are hungry, I make sure he eats before I eat. I did everything that a woman is supposed to do for a man to be happy,” she said.

Maya Blu’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for young women who believe that being submissive and accommodating will guarantee their men’s loyalty. The artiste’s message highlights the importance of financial independence and self-sufficiency for women. She urges women to work hard and avoid depending on men for their basic needs.

Maya Blu’s words echo the sentiment of many feminists in Ghana who believe that women’s economic empowerment is a key component of gender equality. Her message also serves as a reminder to young women that true love and loyalty cannot be bought or earned through submission, but are instead earned through mutual respect and appreciation.
