The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a launch of a year-long calendar of activities in Accra. The event was held under the theme, “Civil Society and the quest for democracy and inclusive development in Ghana and Africa: The Next 25 Years.”

Established in July 1998, CDD-Ghana aims to promote democracy, good governance and inclusive development in Ghana and the rest of Africa. Over the last 25 years, the organization has given voice to ordinary citizens through its public opinion surveys and other primary research. It has also informed and empowered local communities and citizens to demand accountability from public authorities through its social accountability programmes.

Board Chair of CDD-Ghana, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in achieving its objectives. She stated that the organization will work with political parties and actors, as well as all stakeholders, towards deepening democracy and good governance in Ghana.

Dr Gadzekpo highlighted the significance of civil society organizations (CSOs) in demanding accountability from duty-bearers. She emphasized CDD-Ghana’s instrumental role in advocating for the independence of the Auditor-General to hold those in power and leadership positions accountable in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The board chair also mentioned CDD-Ghana’s contributions to setting up the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) to monitor elections in Ghana. Furthermore, she stated plans to re-introduce the democratic watch, a platform for publishing thought pieces on democracy and governance misbehaviours in Ghana.

CDD-Ghana has grown in stature and influence over the years, becoming the foremost think-tank on governance issues in Ghana. Despite controversies surrounding its research findings, the organization remains committed to deepening the nation’s democratic dispensation.

In conclusion, Dr Gadzekpo urged CDD-Ghana to remain true to its mission of deepening democratic consolidation and good governance in Ghana while working with donors and stakeholders to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship.
