Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor has been spotted in a wheelchair lately, and the reason for this has been revealed by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. According to the king of the Ashanti Kingdom, Kufuor failed to prioritize his health after he survived an accident on his way to the castle while he was president.

In November 2007, Kufuor, who was then Chairman of the African Union, was involved in an accident where a private car crashed into his vehicle, rolling it over several times. Fortunately, he escaped unhurt, but his health was compromised as a result of the accident.

Despite the advice of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to take a break and rest, Kufuor decided to put the country first and continued working. He remained in the office till 4 pm before leaving for home. Otumfuo noted that Kufuor’s level of sacrifice for Ghana was commendable but ultimately led to his current health condition.

For the most part, Kufuor’s experience is a cautionary tale for leaders in Ghana and beyond. It highlights the importance of taking care of one’s health, especially when one is in a position of leadership. Leaders often put their countries and their people above themselves, which is noble, but they must also remember that they cannot serve if they are not well.

Additionally, Kufuor’s accident raises questions about road safety in Ghana. Investigations showed that the man who caused the accident was under the influence of alcohol, which impaired his judgment and led to the crash. It is essential for Ghana to improve its road safety policies and enforcement to prevent such accidents from occurring.

In a nutshell, Kufuor’s situation is a reminder that leaders must prioritize their health and wellbeing. Sacrificing one’s health for the sake of the country may seem noble, but it can have long-term consequences. It is also a call to action for Ghana to improve its road safety measures and prevent accidents caused by drunk driving.
