The Functional Executives Committee (FEC) of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned that it won’t remain silent while Dr Kwabena Duffour’s campaign team attacks the members’ integrity. This warning was given by Mustapha Gbande, the deputy general secretary of the NDC.
He claimed that because “we have our integrity to protect,” the national officers of the party cannot have their reputations tarnished.
The comments from Mr. Gbande come in response to a request by Dr. Duffuor to the party’s National Executive to postpone the upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries scheduled for this weekend, May 13, 2023.
He alleges that there are a number of discrepancies in the party’s voter list that are to blame.
Dr. Duffuor’s campaign team protested that the register is insufficient and unreliable to be used for the elections in a letter to the NDC General Secretary.
In response to Dr. Duffour’s letter asking for the election to be delayed, Mr. Gbande claimed that Dr. Duffuor’s team was generating concerns where none existed.
On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, during an appearance on the Ghana Yensom morning show with Odeyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM, Mr. Gbande stated that the album had been sent to all of the candidates for the race around two months prior.
He questioned, “If you don’t know the delegates, how were you campaigning?”
He stated the team working with Dr. Duffour has received albums representing 240 Constituencies so far.
He promised, “The rest will be made available to them today,” while musing, “Is it a case Dr. Duffour wants to be treated as the former president?”
He said it would be erroneous for the former finance minister and his group to believe they have the same influence as the late president John Mahama.
Dr. Duffour needs to be informed that he hasn’t been there before and can’t possibly have the same influence as the past president, said Mr. Gbande.
He claimed that Dr. Duffour is not held in the same regard as the former president.
He issued a warning that the party’s present executives would not support the situation in which a small number of party members plotted to keep the party in opposition during the most recent elections.
