Tidal wave victims at Agorkedzi in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have called on the Ghanaian government to construct a standard sea defense wall instead of offering temporary donations of relief items. The Sunday, April 17 destruction led to significant property loss, and many victims are still counting their losses.

According to Mr. Raphael Agbanavor, the Assembly Member of the Atiteti Electoral Area, the government needs to step in and build a sea defense wall to protect life and property. Although the situation seems to have returned to normalcy, a sea defense wall is essential for the safety of the community.

Mr. Agbanavor also noted that relocation by the affected victims would not be appropriate as some have already moved to more than four locations. “Those here were moved from the Kporkporgbor community in 2014 to Fukpeve in 2016 and later moved to Fuveme before finally landing at Agorkedzi, which is also being destroyed,” he said.

The residents of Agorkedzi are primarily fisherfolks who depend on fishing as their primary source of livelihood, making relocation impossible without causing significant disruptions.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director for Anloga, Mr. Philip Bokorga, stated that his team had assessed the situation and reported to the appropriate authorities for action. All in all, a sea defense wall is critical for the safety of the community, and the government must act swiftly to build one.

Additionally, Mr. Seth Yormewu, the Anloga District Chief Executive, has urged the affected victims to remain calm while the government works to find a lasting solution. Although the only school in the area that was affected by the tidal waves has reopened, some parents are hesitant to send their children back to school due to fear of a possible recurrence.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) also observed that some areas along the shores at Keta were also affected by the tidal waves. The Ghanaian government must act fast to prevent the loss of life and property in coastal areas.
