Yussif Chibsah Advocates for Inclusion of Local-Based Players in Black Stars Call-Up

Yussif Chibsah, a former Ghana international, has advised the Ghanaian football authorities to include local-based players in every Black Stars call-up. This, he believes, will motivate players in the local league to perform better and aspire to be part of the national team. Chibsah, who played for several clubs in Ghana and abroad, acknowledges that players in the local league may lack the quality of foreign-based players, but he suggests that young talented players could be given the opportunity to learn from their senior colleagues in the national team.

Chibsah was reacting to the exclusion of local-based players from Chris Hughton’s first squad as head coach of the Black Stars. The team played against Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March, but none of the players in the squad were from the local league. Chibsah, who spoke to Citi FM, suggested that the authorities consider a quota system for local players to be part of the national team, not necessarily to play but to learn from their senior colleagues.

“For the most part, we all know that not all players get to play when they come to the national team, and if we want to be fair and judge players based on their performance, then we would always go with the foreign-based players,” he said.

Chibsah, who currently works as a football agent, believes that such an initiative will serve as motivation for other local players to perform better in the league with the aim of earning a call-up to the national team.

“You get to mingle with the big boys, it serves as motivation for them, that is where I see the angle of the quota system given to the local players,” he added.

Chibsah’s comments come at a time when the Black Stars are preparing for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Ivory Coast. The team has been drawn in Group C alongside Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia. The tournament will run from January 9 to February 6, 2024.

In a nutshell, Chibsah’s proposal to include local-based players in every Black Stars call-up is a step in the right direction to motivate players in the domestic league. It will not only serve as a learning process for them but will also encourage healthy competition and improve the overall quality of football in Ghana.
