Kweku Yamoah Paintsil, a Lawyer and Family Life Counselor, has advised women who still want to keep their ex-husband’s name after a divorce to buy it from them. In a recent interview on Joy FM’s Home Affairs show, Mr. Paintsil stated that he sees no point in keeping an ex-spouse’s name after a divorce, except for branding purposes.

He added that it is legal for a woman to purchase her ex-husband’s name in such cases. He cited the example of Tina Turner, an American singer who divorced her husband but had to buy his name because she had built a brand with it.

However, Mr. Paintsil also mentioned that if a man feels uncomfortable with his ex-wife still using his name, he can go to court to demand that the woman stops using his name. “There’s a common law remedy. Go to court and seek an order to take your name off her. If you have a good case, the judge should be able to grant your request,” he explained.

He advised women to let people know that they have moved on after a divorce by swearing an affidavit to get back their maiden names. He added humorously, “If you have my name and you divorce me, you have to give me back my name. It’s only fair.”

The show, called “Your Marriage and the Law,” airs every Saturday from 6:15 am to 7:30 am on Joy FM. The topic of discussion for this particular episode was about keeping an ex-spouse’s name after a divorce.

Mr. Paintsil has advised women who wish to keep their ex-husband’s name after a divorce for branding purposes to purchase the name legally. However, if a man feels uncomfortable with his ex-wife still using his name, he can go to court to demand that she stops using it.
