Aaisha Hasan, a 34-year-old woman, was murdered in her home in Canning Town, east London by her husband, Asim Hasan, on May 19th, 2022. Asim Hasan stabbed Aaisha 36 times despite claiming that he had not intended to seriously harm her. However, Aaisha’s documentation of her husband’s abuse was instrumental in securing a guilty verdict for the 33-year-old, who was convicted of murder by a jury at the Old Bailey.

The court heard how Asim Hasan had accused his wife of having an affair in the weeks before her murder, despite evidence later showing that he had been talking to other women on a dating site. Aaisha was so scared of her husband’s violent behavior that she began recording him on her phone and sharing her fears with friends on WhatsApp. She also took pictures of her injuries, such as a black eye and cuts to her face, storing them in a hidden folder.

In a “desperate” WhatsApp message to friends just 10 days before her murder, Aaisha wrote: “I don’t want to call the police on him coz this can get him into serious trouble. I just want him out the house now. I don’t feel safe.” Despite a neighbor alerting the police, no further action was taken because Aaisha appeared well and made no complaint.

On the morning of May 19th, Asim Hasan called 999 and told the operator: “I just stabbed my wife.” Aaisha suffered 36 wounds in the “ferocious and really quite savage attack”. A black-handled kitchen knife, which the defendant allegedly used, was found on the cooker. After being arrested and interviewed by police, Hasan allegedly said: “I am guilty and you can charge me.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, of Scotland Yard, said: “Hasan carried out a ferocious and savage attack on his wife, stabbing her at least 26 times. Aaisha had tried to defend herself during Hasan’s frenzied attack, but she did not stand a chance against him.”

The verdict, which was unanimous, was welcomed by Aaisha’s family and friends. Asim Hasan was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on May 25th.
