The Black Stars’ campaign at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire appears to have ended after failing to win their last Group B encounter.
Ghana squandered a two-goal lead to tie 2-2 with Mozambique, earning two points from three games after losing 1-2 to Cape Verde and drew 2-2 with Egypt.
Many supporters feel the Black Stars’ failure to win was due to head coach Chris Hughton’s odd choice of Joseph Paintsil for Andre Dede Ayew at halftime.
Paintsil had shown to be Ghana’s biggest offensive threat behind Mohammed Kudus, winning the first of two penalties kicks converted by Jordan Ayew.
Hughton, on the other hand, replaced him with Ayew, citing Paintsil’s weariness as the reason for the change.
In the mixed zone following the dismal draw, Paintsil retorted furiously to Hughton’s claim, conveyed to him by a journalist, “What fatigue?”
The Black Stars are third in Group B with two points and will await the results of subsequent games to decide their qualifying status as one of the four best third-placed teams.
