The people has to be aware of the whole voting histories of their representatives in parliament, particularly when it comes to the ratification of loan agreements, according to Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area in the Western Region.
The traditional chief, or cum academician, was speaking in front of the general public as part of celebrations celebrating Takoradi’s 30 years of parliamentary democracy.
The Omanhene [Paramount Chief] claims that Parliament cannot keep approving every loan deal that is presented to it while refusing to share some of the blame for the nation’s current financial dilemma.
He named Joe Ghartey, the MP for Essikado-Ketan, and former Sekondi MP Paapa Owusu Ankomah as residents of his traditional territory.
He stated that he wanted to know their voting histories as well as the justifications for their votes in favor of the loan deals that had brought the nation to its current fiscal predicament.
“Sometimes I even ask myself that should they be (Members of Parliament) based on party lines. One is Paapa Owusu Ankomah and the other one is Joe Ghartey. We are in debt. I would like to see their voting records.”
“How many of those loans did they vote for and why did they vote for it. Has anyone told us and what is Parliament doing about it?”
“We are in debt and anytime they bring the loans, MPs vote and accept it as if we are mad people in this country,” he said angrily.
