Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has stated that the central bank is concerned about the trend of people keeping significant amounts of foreign currency, particularly dollars, in their houses.
Speaking at the 113th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Monday, July 24, Dr. Addison was asked if the BoG was concerned about a report that the recently-retired Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Madam Cecilia Dapaah, had stored large amounts of foreign currency in her bedroom. He responded, “Although we are all concerned about it, there isn’t much we can say about it as it is a legal problem.”
On July 24, Madam Abana Dapaah was arrested by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Officers from the OSP are questioning her, according to a statement.
“Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned from her position as minister of sanitation and water resources on July 22, 2023, was placed under arrest at 11:55 GMT on July 24, 2023, by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in connection with suspected corruption and corruption-related offences involving sizable sums of money and valuable items purportedly taken from her home. Official OSP officials are questioning Ms. Dapaah, according to the statement from the OSP.
Madam Dapaah stated in her letter of resignation that “I want to provide all state authorities my complete cooperation so they may gather all the necessary information.”
She said, “I have no faith that at the conclusion of the proceedings it will be proved that I have behaved myself with integrity during my time in public service and that I will be completely exonerated from all the claims.
According to reports, Madam Cecilia Dapaah kept $1 million, €300,000, and untold amounts of Ghanaian cedis at home.
Two home helpers are accused of stealing these funds, and they are presently on trial at an Accra Circuit Court.
She had before claimed that the facts and the public reporting were inconsistent.
She claimed in her letter of resignation that the numbers in the public domain do not accurately represent the information that she and her husband provided in their testimony to the police.
The former politician acknowledges, however, that she is aware of the significance of such rumours around a person of her standing.
“Therefore, I am resigning because I do not want such a matter to preoccupy government and impede government work at such a crucial time,” the resignation letter reads.
