Hiplife musician, Wanlov the Kubolor, has joined forces with the OR Foundation to advocate for clean water bodies in Ghana. The musician took part in a swim expedition on the Volta Lake in Akosombo to raise awareness about the need to protect our water bodies. The OR Foundation is working towards making the Korle Lagoon in Accra swimmable within the next five years.

During the swim expedition, Wanlov showed his support for the OR Foundation’s mission by swimming 3km on the Volta Lake. He also highlighted the need to protect our water bodies from textile waste. Wanlov has a personal connection to the Korle Lagoon as he grew up in Laterbiokoshie and used to swim in it as a child. He described the lagoon as a water body close to his heart, and it would be a miracle to see people swim in it again.

The Bravehearts expedition’s kayak team provided boat rides for participants who wanted to take in the tranquil environment. The boat ‘The Woman That Does Not Fear’ attracted the attention of many people who wanted to know more. Panel discussions were also held by the crew to give participants an insight into life on the boat, the team’s daily activities, how they face challenges, and how they interact with local communities.

The swim expedition is part of the OR Foundation’s campaign to #StopWasteColonialism. The Global North has run out of landfills and is exporting low-quality products to Ghana, claiming it as charity or recycling. This has become a local problem, a financial burden, and an environmental issue.

Wanlov’s efforts to raise awareness about clean water bodies in Ghana are commendable. His participation in the swim expedition on the Volta Lake is an inspiration to others to take action to protect our environment.
