The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) has been under intense scrutiny since King Promise’s ‘5 Star’ album was awarded the Album of the Year over Black Sherif’s ‘Villain I Never Was’ at the recently concluded event. The decision has sparked heated debates on social media and amongst the general public.
In a recent interview with journalist Kwame Dadzie, VGMA Board member Nii Ayite Hammond defended the decision to award King Promise, stating that his album was equally deserving of the award. Mr Hammond acknowledged that ‘Villain I Never Was’ was a good album, but emphasized that the category definition did not only focus on hit songs and quality of recording, but on the most outstanding compilation of an album released during the year under review.
The Board Member noted that at a point in time, singles were more popular in the country and albums suffered, leading to a revision of the definition of the Album of the Year award. This change was necessary to ensure that quality productions were not overlooked, and that those who took their time to produce quality albums were featured.
For the most part, the Board Member’s explanation appears to have assuaged the concerns of some fans who believed that Black Sherif was robbed of the award. The VGMA’s decision to revise its definition and keywords in order to keep up with the trends has been applauded.
In a nutshell, it is clear that the VGMA Board takes into account various factors in making its decision, including popularity, hit songs, and quality of production. While some may not agree with their choice for Album of the Year, it is evident that the Board’s decision was made after a thorough assessment of all nominees, and the award went to the album that was considered the most outstanding compilation of the year.
