After paying the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) debt of GHC867,698.92, power has been restored to the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya, in the Eastern Region.

The amount was the total cost of electricity used by the University over the course of its first three years of operation, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, Tema Regional PRO for the ECG, informed the Ghana News Agency in Tema.

It was cut off from the national grid, according to Ms. Mensah, on April 4, 2023, despite management’s initial offer to pay GHC 50,000.00, which ECG deemed insufficient to reestablish power.

However, she said that power was brought back on April 18, 2023, following the full settlement of the loan.

She also revealed that on Wednesday, a team of engineers from the ECG’s Tema Regional Office cut off the power to the office block Giaan Towers since the owner was unable to pay their GHC244,457.85 debt.

She continued by saying that Kunedu Cold Stores was also disconnected because it owed ECG GHC247,125.31 for failing to pay for utilised power.

She urged all of the power distributor’s customers who owed money to pay up because even after the exercise, officials would continue to collect the money because periodic revenue mobilisation efforts were an important component of the business’ operations.
