Obaa Yaa Pokua, a UK-based Ghanaian woman, has shared her ordeal of emotional abuse in her marriage, which resulted in mental trauma and psychiatric hospitalization. At the age of 20, she married a man whom she thought was the love of her life and the perfect match for her. Although her family disapproved of the marriage, she was confident in her man, who possessed all the physical qualities that every woman desires.

The first four years of her marriage were uneventful, and they had three children. However, in the fifth year, her husband began to control and isolate her by stopping her from communicating with her family and friends in Ghana and the UK. Obaa Yaa recounted how she suffered emotional abuse and mental trauma, which landed her in psychiatric hospitals. Although she was put on medication to treat her depression and anxiety, her husband cared less about her condition.

Despite her condition becoming worse and heartbreaking for her children to witness, Obaa Yaa stayed in the marriage for 15 more excruciating years, fearing that her children would grow up in a broken home. Eventually, she found the strength to walk away at age 40 with the help of God.

In an emotional interview with Emelia Brobbey on Adom TV’s Okukuseku show, Obaa Yaa recounted how she became numb and speechless during her mental episodes, which made her uncontrollable. But now, after her divorce, she has fully recovered from depression and is grateful for her life.

“I left the marriage at age 40. I stayed that long because of my children. I didn’t want them to grow up in a broken home. It’s only God who helped me through,” she said.

Obaa Yaa’s story highlights the importance of speaking up against emotional abuse and seeking help when in such situations. It is essential to recognize that emotional abuse can lead to mental trauma, and seeking help is vital for recovery.
