At a night vigil organised in memory of James Lutterodt, a previous finalist of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) who unfortunately passed away, there was an altercation between the police and some University of Ghana (UG) students at the Commonwealth Hall.
Police officers are seen chasing kids who were carrying candles during the vigil in a viral video that documents the event.
The video shows a hectic situation, despite the fact that the specifics of what happened are yet unknown.
When they competed on behalf of Keta Senior High School (Ketasco) in 2021, James Lutterodt, Francisca Lamini, and Bright Senyo Godzo were recognised as NSMQ stars.
During the intensely contested programme, their skill and tenacity won over people across the country.
The fact that they were the first pupils from a school in Ghana’s Volta Region to compete in the prestigious NSMQ finals, while finishing in third place, made their accomplishment historic. James Lutterodt was an undergraduate computer science student at the University of Georgia when he tragically passed away.
He apparently died of food poisoning, according to reports. He was about to go for the United States to pursue higher education when the catastrophe struck. It was just 19 years old for James Lutterodt.
The incident at the vigil, which saw a fight break out between the police and UG students, brings further sadness to an already depressing event.
The public is anxiously awaiting additional details about the origin of the tragedy and any possible repercussions as the circumstances around it come into focus.
