The Oti region’s Krachi West Municipality has been plunged into mourning after a man and a woman lost their lives in a canoe accident on the Volta Lake on Friday. The victims have been identified as a teacher from one of the islands and a local woman. According to sources, the pair drowned when their canoe capsized during a fishing trip on the lake.
Eyewitnesses reported that there were strong winds on the lake at the time, which caused several passengers to abandon their journeys. However, the deceased were returning to their island communities after being abandoned on another island by the boat they were travelling on. The boat had left them behind due to the storm.
The canoe was being ridden by a fisherman, who managed to survive the accident. He reported that the victims had been attempting to drop off a passenger on their journey but had missed their stop due to the lateness of the hour. When they turned back to drop off the passenger, the canoe capsized, and the two victims were unable to survive the ordeal.
The bodies of the two victims have been retrieved and are currently being held at the Krachi West Municipal Hospital morgue. Meanwhile, the community is in shock and mourning, as they come to terms with the loss of two of their own.
It is important to note that the Volta Lake is a vital transportation route for many communities in the area, but it can also be dangerous, especially during periods of inclement weather. It is crucial that safety measures are put in place to protect passengers and prevent future accidents on the lake.
For the most part, it is a tragic event that has left a community reeling from the loss of two of their members. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased and the entire community during this difficult time.
