Three people have tragically lost their lives in a motor accident that occurred on Saturday, May 3, in Ntoaso in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipality. Eyewitnesses reported that a speeding 4×4 Kia Sorento with an unregistered number collided with two Benz Sprinter buses with registration numbers GW 8962-22 and GT 5596-14, which were parked along the road. The accident, which happened around 3:30 pm, also left several others with varying degrees of injuries, and they were rushed to the Nsawam Government Hospital for medical attention.

The incident is a stark reminder of the need for drivers to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution on the roads. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death globally, with the majority of victims being pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. In Ghana, road accidents are responsible for thousands of deaths and injuries annually, with speeding, drunk driving, and reckless driving being the most common causes.

It is imperative for motorists to prioritize safety on the roads, not only for themselves but also for other road users. Drivers must ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with safety regulations, such as having functional seatbelts, brakes, and headlights. Additionally, drivers should observe speed limits and avoid distractions while driving, such as using mobile phones or eating while behind the wheel.

The Ghana Police Service has an essential role to play in enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring that drivers who flout the law face appropriate sanctions. However, it is crucial for road safety to be a shared responsibility, with all road users playing their part in reducing accidents and deaths on our roads.

For the most part, we must all work together to promote road safety by being responsible drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. We must prioritize safety over convenience, obey traffic rules, and exercise caution at all times. By doing so, we can prevent needless accidents and fatalities on our roads and make our communities safer for all.
