Broadcaster Bridget Otoo has spoken in on the government’s late cancelation of a political rally scheduled for January 7, 2024 (Constitution Day) in Black Star Square.

She has accused the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and his Vice President of using authoritarian techniques, which she has condemned.

“We live in a country where the worst government in the history of the 4th republic. Most corrupt, intolerant of dissenting views and human rights abuses,” she posted on Twitter (now X).

“This is autocracy!!!” Shame on you, Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia, she said in her post.

On January 7, an event entitled ‘The Convention’ was called off at the last minute, with reports claiming that a substantial security presence was required to keep people away from the location.

The Office of the President acknowledged the cancellation of the program in a statement issued immediately after social media piled criticism on the administration.

The decision was made due to an unforeseeable State Event set to take place at the location, according to a letter dated January 7, 2024 and signed by H.M. Wood, the Chief Director.

It went on to say that the booking money of 10,000 Ghana cedis will be reimbursed to the program’s anonymous organizer.

On the evening of January 7, 2024, social media platforms went into overdrive when an event rumored to be the introduction of the head of The New Force political organization at Black Star Square was prevented by National Security operatives and Ghana Police Service officials.

Over the previous week, posters and billboards in certain Accra neighborhoods announced an event called “The Convention.”

Former Nigerian presidential aspirant Peter Obi, President of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa; Julius Malema, one-time Director of the Kenya School of Law; P.L.O Lumumba, former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States; and Arikana Chihombori-Quao were among the dignitaries present.

Efya, Stonebwoy, and Wiyaala were all scheduled to play during the event.
