Doncaster police are calling for other potential victims of a rapist taxi driver to come forward after Derek Bilby was sentenced to 12 years in jail for sexually assaulting two disabled women. The South Yorkshire Police have stated that they cannot rule out the possibility of other victims.

Bilby, who is 64 years old, was working in Doncaster at the time he met and groomed his victims. Bilby was charged in May 2022 and was convicted in October of the same year after both women gave accounts of his actions, the force said.

Detectives said that Bilby built up a relationship with the two women, who have “significant disabilities,” after picking them up in his taxi, visiting them in their homes and attacking them over a two-year period.

Bilby was quick to take advantage of the trust that the victims had in him. Police have praised the bravery of the victims for reporting Bilby, and have urged anyone with information about possible further attacks to come forward.

Investigating officer Alex Storey said: “It’s sickening to know that both women felt they could trust him, and he was quick to take advantage of this.” Bilby was sentenced to 12 years in prison and will serve an additional six years on extended license, in addition to being added to the sex offenders register for life. The police are calling on anyone with concerns or suspicions about Bilby or other taxi drivers who may have engaged in similar actions to come forward.
