Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu, has spoken out against the media’s coverage of the alleged housing of Free Senior High School (SHS) students in toilet facilities at Ghana Secondary School in Tamale. The MP, after visiting the school, revealed that reports that a toilet facility had been converted into a dormitory were false.

He stated that “Much about what has been put out publicly is not entirely factual and accurate,” and urged the media to exercise caution when reporting on such matters. Iddrisu expressed his disappointment in the treatment of those serving the country, stating that “We expect that we treat people serving this country in a manner that is fair and just.” He further noted that if the authorities had been made aware of the facts earlier, the headmaster and senior housemaster would not have been interdicted because they did nothing wrong.

The MP’s comments came after videos of students sleeping in toilet cubicles went viral on social media, resulting in public outrage and the Ghana Education Service (GES) indicting the school’s headmaster, Douglas Haruna Yakubu. Yakubu denied the allegations, describing them as mischievous and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts. He urged the media to be careful when reporting on such issues.

Iddrisu has called for further investigations into the matter to ascertain the truth. He stated that he will monitor the outcome of the investigations and the implementation of the committee’s report. The MP has stressed the importance of accuracy in media reporting and the need to treat those serving the country fairly and justly.
