Suzanne was married to Alan Hamel and they lived together for more than 50 years before her death. She was formerly married to Bruce Somers and they had one son together, Bruce Somers Jr.

Suzanne’s father, Frank Mahoney worked as a laborer and gardener. He later battled with alcoholism, which affected the family’s dynamics. Suzanne recalled that her father verbally abused and embarrassed her when he turned alcoholic. Despite the challenges, Suzanne recalled her father’s love for music and his ability to make people laugh.

Suzanne’s mother, Marion Mahoney worked as a medical secretary. She provided stability and support for her children. Suzanne admired her mother’s strength and acknowledged her for inculcating a strong work ethic and a belief in self-reliance.

The family is of Irish-American Catholic background. Suzanne often spoke of her fond memories of family gatherings and the importance of her heritage.
